Camel cigarettes are manufactured and sold by Richard Joshua Reynolds, founder of the R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company in Winston, North Carolina, in the United States. Camel Cigarettes brand cigarettes were introduced to the United States in the early 1900's. They were first manufactured in a full flavored, un-filtered variety, and packaged in soft packs. This historical variety is still on the market today, but as with everything else they have advances not only in flavor, taste and varieties being offered but also in style. Advertisements and marketing for Camel brand cigarettes began even before the cigarettes were actually available for purchase. These teasers simply told their audience that "the Camels are coming". Another early promotional strategy was the circus camel, Old Joe, who was driven around town to give away free cigarettes. Camel representatives often will visit local bars and hot clubs doing much of the same thing, giving out free cigarettes, minus of course old Joe camel. The camel on the packages of Camel Silver cigarettes was modeled from Old Joe, who was uncooperative during his photo shoot. He even threatened the cameraman a time or two, resulting in the "indignant" camel that has been reproduced on several billion of packs of cigarettes to date.
Camel Silver cigarettes were first blended to produce a milder taste in comparison to other brands that were considered harsh at this time. Because the cigarettes were made from Turkish tobacco, the cigarettes were much smoother and easier to smoke, in turn, drawing more smokers to the brand simply for the taste alone.
